Finding Your Fit: A Simple Guide to Measuring Yourself at Home

Five minutes and a measuring tape is all it takes to shop with confidence. Here’s how to take your measurements correctly.

Spools of thread in rich colours – getting the fit right

The right size makes all the difference to how an outfit looks and feels. Taking your measurements at home takes about five minutes, and once you have them noted down, shopping online gets much easier.

What you’ll need

  • A soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing)
  • A well-fitting bra or the innerwear you’d wear with the outfit
  • A mirror – or a friend to help

How to measure

  1. Bust: measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not tight.
  2. Waist: measure around your natural waist – the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel.
  3. Hips: stand with feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips.
  4. Shoulder: measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other across your back.
  5. Length: for kurtas and dresses, measure from the highest point of your shoulder down to where you’d like the garment to end.

Measure over light clothing, breathe normally and don’t pull the tape tight – you want the measurement your body actually is.

Reading the result

If you fall between two sizes, think about the fit you like: choose the larger size for a relaxed, easy fit and the smaller one for a closer fit. Structured pieces like corsets need the most accurate bust and waist measurements, while kaftans and flowy styles are more forgiving.
