Beautiful clothes deserve a little care. Delicate fabrics like silk and georgette, and natural ones like linen and cotton, each have their own needs – get them right and your favourite pieces will stay beautiful for many seasons. Always check the care label first; these are general guidelines.
Silk and satin
- Dry clean embellished or heavily worked pieces.
- For plain silk, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent – never wring.
- Dry flat in the shade; direct sun can fade colour.
- Iron on the reverse at a low setting, or use a steamer.
Georgette and chiffon
- Hand wash gently or use a delicate cycle in a mesh bag.
- Roll in a towel to remove water, then hang to dry.
- Steam rather than iron to avoid shine marks.
Turn printed and embroidered pieces inside out before washing and ironing – it protects the surface.
Linen and cotton
- Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold or lukewarm water.
- Wash dark and bright colours separately for the first few washes.
- Iron while slightly damp for crisp linen; a few soft creases are part of its charm.
Storing your pieces
- Store embellished and heavy garments folded, with tissue between the folds, so they don’t stretch on hangers.
- Keep silks in breathable cotton or muslin bags, not plastic.
- Air out festive wear after each use before putting it away.
- Refold occasionally so creases don’t set in.
