Few pieces work as hard as a kaftan. It slips on in seconds, flatters every shape, keeps you cool through an Indian summer and still looks considered. The trick is in what you pair it with. Here are five easy ways to wear one – no stylist required.
1. The relaxed brunch look
Pair a printed cotton kaftan top with straight or wide-leg pants in a solid colour picked from the print. Add flat sandals, a woven tote and small hoops. It reads put-together but takes two minutes.
2. The beach and vacation edit
A breezy kaftan is the easiest thing to pack: it doubles as a cover-up and a dinner outfit. Wear it loose over swimwear by day; in the evening, belt it at the waist and add a statement earring.
When in doubt, define the waist. A thin belt or a tie turns a loose kaftan into a silhouette.
3. Festive, the easy way
Choose a kaftan in a richer fabric – satin, tissue or one with embellishment – and wear it with matching pants for a co-ord feel. Jhumkas, a potli bag and a bold lip are all it needs for a mehendi, a puja or a family dinner.
4. Work-from-anywhere
Go for a solid or subtly printed kaftan in a mid-length, and keep accessories minimal: a watch, a slim chain, loafers or juttis. Comfortable enough for a long day, polished enough for a video call.
5. Layer it
On cooler evenings, layer a kaftan top over a fitted tee or camisole and finish with a light cape or shrug. Layering adds depth and lets you re-wear the same piece in new ways.
Quick styling rules
- Balance volume: a loose kaftan pairs best with slimmer or straight bottoms.
- Pick one hero – either the print or the jewellery, not both competing.
- Mind the length: hip-length tops suit pants; ankle-length styles stand alone.
